Henry Gerber is the founder of Chicago’s society for human rights, which was founded in 1924. This organization is the first gay rights group in the Untied states.
In 1917 Henry Gerber was temporarily hospitalized due to his sexual preference. Henry founded the “Society of Human Rights” in Chicago; the first American homosexual rights organization. The group published the newsletter “Friendship Freedom” , which was the country’s first documented gay civil rights publication. The group later disbanded because of police raids and later many of the group members were arrested.
We have now come to a time where we can all love who we want to love without fear of being arrested. Without the many sacrifices made by Henry Gerber and the organization, we may not be where we are today. We need to remember what started the rights of people who love the same gender. Without them, we may not have the rights we have now. Henry was one of the first people who paved the way for LGBTQ people to have rights.
